The CSTM is a three-level progression system. Each level builds on the last — from your first movements on a surfskate to advanced ramp and bowl technique.

No shortcuts. No cue overload. A clear path calibrated to where you are and where you want to go.

Level 01
Fundamentals

Learn the basic movements of surfskating — stance, balance, pumping, and your first carves. The foundation everything else builds on.

Level 02
Surf Technique

Surfskate applied directly to surfing. Bottom turns, top turns, reading waves — translate what you train on concrete to what you do in the water.

Level 03
Ramps & Bowl

Surfskate technique for transition riding. Take everything you've built and apply it to ramps, bowls, and the vertical game.

São Pedro do Estoril. 2018. Vasco was coaching surf strength and conditioning at Clube de Surf de Portugal — the oldest surf club in the country — when surfskate quietly entered the programme. A few athletes. A board. A concrete surface next to the ocean. And a question that wouldn't go away: what if they could train surf technique on land?

The interest from athletes was immediate and impossible to ignore. So that summer, with the goal of keeping the squad training through the months they usually disappeared, Vasco organised a month-long surfskate competition at the club. Simple rules, simple prizes, no infrastructure. Six to eight kids at the start. By the end of the month: twenty.

"There's something here I can't explain." That was the thought. The following year, Vasco proposed the first ever official surfskate competition in Portugal — backed by Cascais municipality. Instead of deciding everything himself, he created a group where the athletes discussed, voted on, and decided everything: the name, the logo, the rules, the judging criteria, the prizes. He just guided the process. Forty-two kids and teens showed up on the day.

What happened after was simple: messages started arriving asking for surfskate classes. The method followed naturally. Then the brand. Concrete Surfers is the structured version of what started on that parking lot — built around the belief that if you give people a real method and real ownership of their progression, they show up.

Our Mission

To give every surfer a clear, honest path to improvement. Not through hype, not through inspiration alone, but through deliberate training, expert coaching, and a community that takes progression seriously. We exist to close the gap between the surfer you are and the surfer you want to be.

Our Vision

To become Europe's leading surf and surfskate coaching brand — the reference point for anyone serious about getting better. A world where surfskate is recognised as a legitimate training discipline, where women who surf have access to world-class structured coaching, and where the Concrete Surfers community spans every major surf and skate city on the continent.

What Makes Us Different

Most coaching stops at motivation. We build systems. The Concrete Surfers Training Method gives every student a precise diagnosis of where they are, what they need to work on, and how to train it — on the board, in the water, and in their head. We combine surf coaching, surfskate training, video analysis, and mental coaching into one complete programme. That combination doesn't exist anywhere else in Europe.

The Community

Concrete Surfers started as a coaching brand and became a community. From retreat participants who keep coming back, to the European Surfskate Community Event we're building in Lisbon in 2026 — the people who train with us tend to stay. Not because we ask them to, but because real progression is rare, and when you find it, you don't let go.

The Coach

The coach behind the method.

Vasco Rodrigues
Sport Scientist · Surf & Surfskate Coach · Founder, Concrete Surfers

Sport Science graduate. Certified surf coach (Level 1) and certified skate coach (Level 2). But the real foundation is simpler than that: a lifelong obsession with understanding how people move — and how to help them move better.

Surfskate entered Vasco's life while coaching surf strength and conditioning at Clube de Surf de Portugal, the oldest surf club in Portugal, based in São Pedro do Estoril. He started skating there himself, began coaching surf athletes on it, and the connection became impossible to ignore — surfskate, done right, was one of the most direct tools available for improving surf technique on land.

Since then, he's coached hundreds of people to skate and develop their surfskating skills — from complete beginners stepping on a board for the first time to experienced surfers looking to sharpen specific technique. Concrete Surfers is the structure built around that work: a method, a brand, and a community for people who take their progression seriously.

What we stand for

Four principles. No exceptions.

01
Honesty Over Hype

We tell you where you actually are, not where you want to be. Honest diagnosis is the first step in every coaching relationship we build.

02
Method Over Motivation

Inspiration fades. Structure stays. Every programme we run is built on a repeatable system — not energy, not luck.

03
Complete Over Partial

Technique without mental training is half a programme. Surfskate without surf application is half a method. We work with the whole picture.

04
Community Over Crowds

We keep groups small deliberately. Eight people per retreat. One-on-one private sessions. The quality of attention is non-negotiable.

Surf Retreats

Our retreats are designed exclusively for women at two levels: complete beginners and experienced beginners. Complete beginners are women who have always wanted to surf but never dared to try, or who have had a few lessons and want more confidence in the whitewater. Experienced beginners can catch green waves but want to improve their take-off, turns, and overall technique. We do not run retreats for advanced surfers — the coaching approach is built specifically around these two groups.

A maximum of 8 participants per retreat. This is a deliberate choice. Small groups mean each participant gets real coaching attention — video analysis, surfskate training, and water time are all personalised. That only works at this scale.

Each day is structured around surf sessions, surfskate training, video analysis, and mental coaching. The schedule adapts to conditions — we surf when the ocean is right, and work on the land programme when it isn't. A typical day includes a morning surf session with in-water coaching, a midday video review of that session's footage, an afternoon surfskate session targeting the technique patterns identified in the video,. Evenings are unstructured.

Aljezur in the Algarve — a quieter stretch of Atlantic coastline with consistent waves, ideal for learning. Costa da Caparica, just south of Lisbon — a long Atlantic beach with excellent conditions for beginner and intermediate progression. The specific location depends on the retreat: May Beginners and September Beginners are based in Aljezur; May and September Experienced Beginners rotate between both. Check the retreat dates for exact assignments.

The retreat includes a mental training component that begins one month before the in-person retreat, with online sessions that prepare participants psychologically before they arrive. Topics include managing fear, building self-trust, and developing the mental habits that support learning in the ocean.

No. All surfboards are provided and selected to match your level and conditions. Surfskate boards are also provided for training sessions. If you already have your own equipment and want to use it, that's fine — just let us know in advance.

You should be able to catch and ride unbroken green waves with some consistency, even if your technique is rough. You don't need to be doing turns yet — the retreat builds those. If you're unsure, reach out via WhatsApp or email and describe your current level — we'll tell you honestly which retreat fits.

As early as possible. With a maximum of 8 participants, spots fill months in advance — particularly the May dates. We review applications in order received. Once confirmed, you'll receive details on securing your spot.

The majority of retreat participants come alone — and get the most out of it that way. The retreat format naturally builds connection between participants. Solo travellers arrive open and focused. Coming with a friend is equally welcome, but you absolutely don't need one.

Full accommodation and logistics details are included in the information pack sent after your application is confirmed. We work with a small number of partner properties close to the surf spots. Contact us directly for full pricing information.

Private Surfskate Sessions

A private session starts with a brief assessment of your level and goals. From there, Vasco designs the session around what you specifically need — whether that's understanding basics of stance and pumping, working on a specific maneuver, improving surf application, or progressing toward ramps and bowl. Sessions are one-on-one, typically 60–90 minutes, in Lisbon, Cascais, or Costa da Caparica.

No. If you're a first-timer, a board will be provided. If you're looking to buy your own, we can advise on the right setup — Vasco works with Carver, YOW, and Smoothstar and knows which boards suit which riders.

Not at all. Complete beginners are common in private sessions. Starting with private coaching accelerates learning significantly — you build correct habits from the first push rather than spending months unlearning mistakes.

Sessions take place in the Lisbon area — including Cascais, Costa da Caparica, and Lisbon itself (Expo area, Parque das Gerações). The location is agreed when booking based on your preference and the session goals.

Message us on WhatsApp at +351 92 339 4415 with your level, location preference, and availability. We respond within 24 hours. You can also email info@concrete-surfers.com.

The Concrete Surfers Training Method

A three-level progression framework for surfskate. Level 1 — Fundamentals: stance, balance, pumping, first carves. Level 2 — Surf Technique: surfskate applied to surfing — bottom turns, top turns, wave reading. Level 3 — Ramps & Bowl: transition surfskating on ramps and in bowls. Each level has clear markers so you always know where you are and what comes next.

Yes — but only if you use it correctly. This is the core distinction the CSTM makes: surfskate doesn't improve surfing. How you use it does. Riding a surfskate for fun has limited transfer to the ocean. Training specific surf movements deliberately — bottom turn mechanics, weight distribution, pumping — does transfer. The method exists to make that transfer real and measurable.

We work with Carver (the industry standard for surf simulation), YOW (dynamic and progressive), and Smoothstar (highly surf-mimetic, excellent for development). The right brand depends on your level and mechanics — we advise individually.

Parts of it, yes. We're developing online resources including a structured surfskate course with video exercises. However the most common errors in surfskate are invisible to the rider — what feels right and what looks right are often very different. A coach, or minimum video review, closes that feedback loop far faster than solo training.

European Workshops

Hands-on surfskate coaching events across four cities in 2026: Kraków, Amsterdam, Vienna, and Hamburg. Each workshop brings the Concrete Surfers coaching approach directly to the community — structured technique sessions, drills, and focused coaching usually only available at a retreat. Open to all levels.

Anyone who wants to learn surfskate properly or improve their existing technique — regardless of surf background. Particularly well-suited for beginner to intermediate riders who want structured progression rather than just free skate time.

Exact dates are being confirmed now. Register your interest on this page and you'll be first to receive confirmed dates and booking info for your city. Early registrants get priority access before spots open publicly.

General

The surf retreats are women-only — this is deliberate and non-negotiable. Women learn faster, take more risks, and progress more confidently in women-only surf environments. The private surfskate sessions and European Workshops are open to everyone.

Coaching is delivered in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Our primary retreat audience comes from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria — all sessions are fully accessible in English.

Several ways. We work with people already past the absolute beginner stage — not a learn-to-surf school. Every programme combines surf coaching, surfskate, video analysis, and mental coaching — most surf schools offer one of those. Group sizes are tiny: 8 max per retreat, one-on-one for private sessions. And the CSTM is a structured progression system — not a collection of tips, but a framework with defined levels and clear benchmarks.

Based in Portugal, operating between Lisbon, Cascais, Costa da Caparica, and Aljezur in the Algarve. European Workshops bring coaching to cities across central and northern Europe.

Surfskate & Surf Coaching — Reference

Surfskate coaching is structured instruction on riding a surfskate board — a skateboard built with a specialised front truck that mimics the turning and pumping mechanics of surfboard riding. It focuses on surf-specific movements: generating speed through pumping, executing bottom and top turns on concrete, and building muscle memory that transfers directly to ocean surfing. Relevant for surfers who want to train between sessions, and for non-surfers who want to learn surfskating as a standalone sport.

The most commonly recommended beginner setups are from Carver, YOW, and Smoothstar. Smoothstar is particularly well regarded for beginners — its thruster fin system produces a natural surf-like sensation and rewards correct body mechanics early. Carver's CX truck is the industry standard. YOW suits riders who progress quickly and want a dynamic, reactive feel. Board length and wheelbase should match the rider's height and weight — in-person advice from a qualified coach before purchasing is strongly recommended.

Portugal is one of Europe's top destinations for women's surf retreats. The Algarve — particularly around Aljezur and Arrifana — offers sheltered beginner beaches alongside more challenging spots. Costa da Caparica, south of Lisbon, has waves suitable for all levels. The most effective women's retreats combine in-water coaching with complementary training (surfskate, video analysis, mental coaching) and keep groups small. The Concrete Surfers retreats are built on this model — max 8 participants, coaching from Vasco, structured weekly programme.

Through several specific mechanisms: Muscle memory for turns — repeating bottom and top turn mechanics on concrete builds movement patterns without the variables of waves, wetsuits, and fatigue. Weight distribution awareness — surfskate immediately penalises incorrect position, building proprioceptive feedback faster than water time alone. Pumping mechanics — training hip and upper body movements that generate speed on a wave. Volume of repetitions — in one hour of surfskate you execute hundreds of turns; in one hour of surfing, maybe 10–15. The caveat: poorly designed training reinforces bad habits. A clear framework is essential.

Mental coaching for surfers addresses the psychological barriers that limit performance in the ocean — fear of waves, hesitation at the take-off, pulling out at the last second, panic in wipeouts, and confidence in crowded line-ups. These are learnable skills. Surf mental coaching draws from sports psychology, cognitive behavioural frameworks, and breathwork to give surfers tools for managing fear responses and maintaining composure. For beginner and intermediate surfers, mental barriers are often a bigger obstacle than technique — which is why integrating mental coaching directly into a surf programme produces faster, more durable results.

Surfskate has grown significantly across Europe, with active communities in Lisbon, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Vienna, Hamburg, and Kraków. Portugal — particularly Lisbon — remains the strongest hub. The scene skews older than traditional skateboarding (core demographic: 25–45) and has a notably strong women's presence. Concrete Surfers is working to formalise that infrastructure with the European Surfskate Community Event planned for Lisbon in 2026 — a 3–5 day event targeting around 100 participants from across Europe.

Notable spots include: Parque das Nações (Expo) — wide, smooth surfaces with long carving lines; Parque das Gerações (Oeiras) — purpose-built with bowl, street, and open concrete; Marvila / Chelas — urban terrain favoured by more advanced riders; Costa da Caparica promenade — flat, smooth, directly adjacent to the surf. Private Concrete Surfers sessions rotate between these depending on the session goals and participant level.

Beyond certification: Specificity — diagnoses your individual technique, not generic advice. Video use — surf is dynamic; a coach who doesn't use video is working with significantly less information. Complementary training knowledge — a coach who understands surfskate, fitness, and the mental game offers a more complete path. Honest assessment — the most useful feedback is often the most uncomfortable. Group size awareness — in a group of 10, you're getting roughly 10% of the coaching attention.

The defining feature of a surfskate is its specialised front truck, which allows a far greater range of rotation than a standard skateboard or longboard. This rotation creates the surf-like pumping and carving sensation — enabling the board to be driven from the hips and upper body the way a surfboard is driven in the water. A longboard is built for stability and rolling distance — it does not replicate surf mechanics and has very limited transfer to ocean surfing. The surfskate front truck (Carver CX/C7, YOW Meraki, Smoothstar thruster, or similar) is the essential component that makes surf simulation on land possible.

With consistent training and coaching, most beginners reach a confident intermediate level within 3–6 months at 2–3 sessions per week. Without coaching, that timeline typically doubles — riders plateau on incorrect technique and spend significant time unlearning. CSTM Level 1 Fundamentals can be completed in 4–8 weeks of structured training. Level 2 typically takes 2–4 months depending on surf background and frequency. Level 3 is ongoing.

The surfers who improve fastest share one thing: they stopped waiting for the right conditions and started training the right variables.
